TMZ spoke with Darrell Roberts, Matt’s father, who said the loss of his son “is devastating.” He said Matt was set to perform at a charity event just outside of Wisconsin. Darrell, who was in an adjoining room at the hotel where the two were staying, said he last saw his son after a rehearsal that ended at 1 a.m. local time on Saturday (Aug. 20). He was awoken by detectives around 9 a.m. and told Matt had died overnight.

The cause of death has not been confirmed, but Darrell reportedly said prescription pills were involved and may have led to an accidental overdose.

Matt left 3 Doors Down in an amicable split in 2012, citing problems with blood circulation and other health issues. He grew up in Mississippi with lead singer Brad Arnold and bassist Todd Harrell, and they formed the band in 1996.
